Keep your Iphone Charged during Power Outages

Posted on 23:00 by Unknown
Be prepared for an Emergency.

First, always keep your phones and laptop batteries charged.

These should be readily available:

  • Car Charger - to charge your phone via your car battery.

  • USB Cord - you can plug your phone or tablet into your laptop (save power by not using the juice hungry laptop).

Also consider a backup charger such as a Mophie, or Zagg Sparq

On your phone:

  • Close down all Apps including WiFi and Bluetooth.

  • Turn down screen's brightness.

  • Note texting uses less power than a call.

Fix for Why do I have to keep logging into Yahoo Mail

Posted on 18:37 by Unknown
All of a sudden I had to log into Yahoo Mail everytime I tried to access it. Finally I realized that Yahoo Mail had made a change and the bookmark I had was no longer taking me to my inbox, but to the logon page instead. So, do this:

Log-in to your yahoo mail, from the the inbox page set a new bookmark (I just drive the URL to my toolbar). Finally, back to normal!

Remove Speck's CandyShell for iPhone 4/4S

Posted on 19:47 by Unknown

How to remove the CandyShell:

Place your thumbs right on the Speck logo on the back of the case, and use your fingers to gently flex and bend the top corners of the CandyShell off of the top corners of your iPhone 4S/4. Make sure to gently press the back of the case with your thumbs as you bend the top corners, it will make it much easier to pop your iPhone 4S/4 out of the CandyShell!. Once you have the top of your iPhone 4S/4 out, the bottom will slip off easily.

How to Edit Long Feedly Category Names

Posted on 08:02 by Unknown
On Feedly's edit page (http://www.feedly.com/home#contents/edit), if the category name is long enough to extend over the pencil icon ('rename category'), you can not rename the category.

You can go to Google Reader to shorten the name (until July 1 when it disappears) or you can create a new category, drag the feeds into it, and the old category will disappear.

Love Feedly, but that's a lot of work! Feedly, please fix.

How to Export LinkedIn Contacts

Posted on 23:42 by Unknown
Log into your account on LinkedIn, and then click this link to go to the Export LinkedIn Connections page: http://www.linkedin.com/addressBookExport

There are four formats you can choose:

Microsoft Outlook, Outlook Express, Yahoo! Address Book, or Mac OS Address Book

But saving it in any of the .csv formats allows you to open it in Excel.

Goodbye Google Reader - Feedly Saves the Day!!!

Posted on 10:57 by Unknown
I thought I would die when Google announced they were retiring Google Reader. But I am going to live!!!.

I love how Feedly is so well integrated with Chrome. Even easier and quicker to add feeds to my RSS reader than Google Reader was! Be sure to add the feature where a faint Feedly pixel shows up in the bottom right corner on every site that has a feed. Click it, add it, adjust tags, etc.

10 Great Tips for Identity Theft Protection

Posted on 13:46 by Unknown

  1. When in doubt...Shred (paper docs that is)

  2. Don’t carry your Social Security card in your wallet (does anyone seriously do that?)

  3. Check financial statements carefully each month for fraudulent activity

  4. Use numbers and letters when creating your passwords

  5. Install a wiping program on your Smartphone

  6. Do not use the same passwords for all accounts

  7. Check your credit reports at least 3 times a year: You can receive one credit report from each of the three Credit Reporting Agencies per year at www.annualcreditreport.com. If you obtain a report once every three or four months, you can monitor your credit at a basic level for free.  (great idea to phase this!)

  8. Stay safe with a Virtual Private Network (VPN) when using public WiFi: The best way to protect yourself from these attacks is to use a Virtual Private Network or VPN like PrivateWiFi.com.

  9. Make sure your antivirus is complete and up-to-date

  10. Opt-out of prescreened credit card offers: www.optoutprescreen.com.

(source & more details: https://www.privatewifi.com/10-identity-theft-protection-tips-from-the-itrc/)

I also purchased Identity Theft insurance from State Farm ($25/year as an optional rider if you already use State Farm) because if (or should I say "when") it happens it is nice to know someone will help sort it all out. I heard it is quite time consuming, stressful, and costly.

Be Safe: Install a VPN before using Public WiFi

Posted on 13:23 by Unknown
If you log into public Wi-Fi, hackers can gain access to your computer or phone (and it doesn't matter if you pay an access fee or input a password, it's still public). So before you plug in your bank account passwords, credit card numbers, or other sensitive information, invest in a VPN (virtual private network). Identity theft can happen quickly.

A VPN is a subscription software that encrypts web traffic to/from your device.

VPN companies I'm currently researching*:

  • PrivateWiFi.com ($85/year)

  • Private Internet Access ($7/month, $40/year)

  • proXPN ($10/mo)

  • WiTopia ($50/yr to $70/yr)

*will report back on which one I selected and why.
