  5. Perform any of the following actions:

    • In the Home Page Address field, type a web address.

    • Change the Start Page field.

    • WHAT I DID:  TYPED THIS INTO THE HOME PAGE FIELD: http://www.google.com/reader/m/view/?dc=gorganic (WITH FONT SIZE 12)

Google Chrome - "Print Selection" Grayed Out - Print Selection Now Works!!!

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
UPDATE 8/18/2011: DANG. It's happened again. Print selection is NOT available. My version: 13.0.782.112. History below tells me there's nothing I can do until a new version of Chrome. Geeze Google.

UPDATE 10/10/2010: Looks like Chrome upgrades itself as my version is now:  7.0.517.41.  Print selection and all else works still!

UPDATE 9/12/2010: Print Selection now works! I didn't update Chrome, it just started working. My Chrome version: 6.0.472.55.

UPDATE 8/3/2010:  "Install the DEV CHANNEL of Chrome. The following link will bring you to a page where you can install the DEV CHANNEL, and get "print selection"."

http://www.google.com/chrome/eula.html?extra=devchannel

Beware this is a development installation which means it's not a public release. You may find 'other' issues (e.g. my Blogger extension no longer works).  The print selection fix will be installed in the next public release as well.

8/3/2010 - Later that day... Ummmm. OK.  Just reinstalled the non-dev version as too many other things not working yet.  It just depends on what you want - print selection, or everything else.  I can't do without everything else, and I'd already compensated with good options for print selection so that is why I reverted.  Will wait for public release.

I've become used to not having the print selection feature and this is what I do to compensate:

1-Highlight your selection, copy/paste to notepad, print.

2-Install the IE tab.  Then you can click the icon to open the IE tab and copy/paste the URL.  Print/selection works in this tab.

3-This is great! Add "Print Friendly" to your bookmarks.  Clicking the bookmark brings your selection into a pop-up box where you can also "remove images" by simply checking a box, and then print.

Not as easy, but works.

------------------------------------------

UPDATE 5/18/10: "Future dev channel releases will have this fix, as will beta and stable releases of 6.0 when those happen." bystuartmorgan@chromium.org http://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=22937#c65

------------------------------------------

2/9/2010:

I love Google Chrome - it is fast and the interface is by far the best browser design IMO.

But alas, I'm completely frustrated without the option to "Print Selection".  I tweeted back in Oct'09 that finally Chrome had Print Selection, and it did!  But I upgraded to the latest version (4x) sometime in Jan'10, and that option is now grayed out again. :(  I tried a system rollback but find that even the latest restore point has the "upgraded" browser.  It is truly a sad day.  Sigh.

You can follow this issue on Chromium's project queue here:  Issue# 22937

I also follow this thread Issue# 1682.  This thread is no longer updated by Chromium but people still enter useful comments from time-to-time.

And here's Google Chrome Release Notes site.

Install BlogThis! Button

Posted on 09:07 by Unknown
Two Methods:

1- You can either get the link and drive it your toolbar from here: What is BlogThis! ? - Blogger Help

2-Or you can add as an Extension in Chrome.  I like this method as the icon sits beside your address bar and doesn't take up space (or move around) like it can on your bookmarks bar.  Get the extension for Chrome here: https://chrome.google.com/extensions/detail/pengoopmcjnbflcjbmoeodbmoflcgjlk

Tivo Not Changing Channels with Motorola DCT700

Posted on 21:10 by Unknown
This worked! Although the box is Motorola, you need to select General Instruments.

Thanks to Broofa on Tivo and Digital Cable Motorola DCT700 [Text View] - TiVo Community:

"To make a long story short, the Motorola DCT700 is, in fact, manufactured by General Instruments (I got this straight from TiVo tech support). So when walking through the channel changing setup you need to choose "GI" as the manufacturer. Crazy huh??? Especially when there isn't a single indication on the box to that effect. Anyhow, when all is said and done, I landed on the 00093-C IR code for this, which seems to be working just fine.

Now if that's not enough, the tech support weenie gave me the following codes to try: 10006, 10019, 10032, 10042, and 10046. I played around with those as well and the 10046-B setting seemed to work. Some others probably do as well, but I spent too much time on this as it is."

4. Save.

Excel | Charts - How to show the grand total on top of stacked bars?

      Posted on 19:24 by Unknown
      This works great!

Compute the sum in the worksheet. Copy this range, select the chart, and use Paste Special to add it as a new series. This makes a new column stacked atop the others, not what you want. Select this series, go to Chart menu > Chart Type, and choose a line type chart. Double click the line, on the Data Labels tab, choose the Show Value option, and on the Patterns tab, choose None everywhere so the series becomes invisible. Finally, double click on the series of labels, and on the Alignment tab, choose Above for Position.

      2. Navigate to the following registry branch:

      3. Replace the [exe] with the actual file extension that you want to restore its file type association to revert back to original Windows Vista default. If you unsure, simply browse through all the sub-key under FileExts.

      Laptop - Volume too low

      Posted on 07:12 by Unknown
The volume on my Sony Vaio VGN-Z610Y is too low. At maximum volume levels there is just not much sound. I tried external speakers and that does not change the volume level at all. I've been searching and trying the different suggestions but so far nothing has worked. It looks like purchasing an external sound card may help. How annoying that Sony has this issue. The laptop wasn't cheap either ($2K or so).

Will continue researching this when I have more time. If something you've tried has worked, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks!! ♥♥♥

Laptop - No Warning for Low Battery

      Posted on 06:59 by Unknown
My Sony Vaio VGN-Z610Y does not warn me when the battery is low. I have to think to look at the little power icon in the system tray. Usually I miss seeing that the battery is too low, and my machine just shuts down at the critical point before I can do anything about it (like remembering to plug in the power). My old machine would indicate a low battery with sound and a visual that would pop up in the middle of the screen. I'd like to get those reminders here on this machine.

      Any suggestions?

      I'm trying this today:

In the control panel, select VAIO Control Center, Power Options ("Configure energy-saving settings on your computer"), Low batter option: uncheck "Automatically enter Hibernate mode when battery is low" Will let you know what happens... Will I now get a warning instead of a 'shut down'? UPDATE: No still no good warning.

Hit [ALT]+[F11] to open the Visual Basic Editor

Go to “Insert” > “Module” and in the pop-up window copy:

Google Reader - The fix for: You don't have permission to view this feed

      Posted on 18:22 by Unknown
Here's how to fix "You don't have permission to view this feed" in Google Reader:

"Something on your computer or network (proxy/firewall/antivirus/etc) is probably interfering with Reader's access to the internet when you use http. Since https encrypts the data, it is less likely to be stopped by these programs. In general, if you find that you are unable to access Reader with this kind of error, try using https first."

Simply replace http:// with https:// in the address bar.  It works!

      Outlook 2007 - Rules aren't processing correctly

      Posted on 08:22 by Unknown
Be sure to check the "stop processing more rules" after entering your Rules Wizard criteria.  If you don't check that box then you'll either get duplicate email messages in your folders, or the rule won't work at all.  This works differently than in Outlook 2003, Outlook Express, or Windows Mail.

You'll see "stop processing more rules" after the clicking Next under "What do you want to do with the message?"

Outlook 2007 - How to send an Email to all Contacts in a Specific Category

      Posted on 12:32 by Unknown

To send email, set up a meeting or task, or write a letter to all the Contacts in a (color coded) category:

      1. In Outlook, go to your Contacts section.

      2. From the View menu, select Current View, and then By Category.

      3. Highlight the category you want to send email to by clicking it.

      4. In Outlook 2007, from the Actions menu, select Create, and then New Message to Contact. In Outlook 2000, 2002, or 2003, from the Actions menu, select New Message to Contact.

Blackberry - How to disable Automatic Device Application Update during Sync

      Posted on 19:15 by Unknown
After a re-install of BlackBerry desktop, I noticed that each time I sync'd there would be an automatic device application check and update. So each time I stabilized a version, a new one would sneak in and my settings would no longer be as expected.

Finally, this is what works (2/27/2010):

You will need to remove the Blackberry Desktop Application (sorry, you really do... #fail by Blackberry) and re-install it (simply modifying the program will not work - more on that later), being careful to do these two things during the install:

1- Click the icon next to "BlackBerry Automatic Update" and change it to "This feature will not be available."

2- Later on in the installation, un-check "Check for software updates."

This article explains why (has to do with temporary files unavailable if you simply try to modify the program):

      Thanks JerryD!

Outloook 2007 - Newly Installed but won't Open "Cannot open your default e-mail folders"

      Posted on 23:48 by Unknown
Purchased and installed Outlook 2007.  Received error message when opening Outlook for the first time:

"Cannot open your default e-mail folders.  Outlook cannot start because a data file to send and receive mail cannot be found.  To ad a data file, such as a personal folder file, double-click the Mail icon in Windows Control Panel."

If you don't see the Mail icon in the "classic view" control panel, click on this icon instead "View 32-bit Control Panel Items".  Voila - there is the mail icon.  Click it, then click "data files".  Add a new data file.  I put mine in C:\Users\abc\Documents\Outlook (you'll have a different user name than 'abc').

Restart Outlook. It should work now!

      Backup Google Reader Subscriptions

      Posted on 10:55 by Unknown
Simply go to Settings when logged in to Google Reader (upper right corner, you may get a drop down box so select "Reader Settings").

      Select "Import/Export"

Click on "Export your subscriptions as an OPML file"

and Save this file to your harddrive.

You can import these feeds back into Google Reader (or any reader that reads OPML files) quite easily by selecting "Import your subscriptions" on this same page.

      Be safe - backup.

      Get into Safe Mode!

      Posted on 20:02 by Unknown
To get into Safe mode, reboot and press the F8 key right before Windows starts up.  If you can't get into safe mode this way, here is the alternative method I use:

      • Click the Start Button

      • Type “msconfig” in the search box

      • Select “msconfig”

      • A “System Configuration” window will open

      • Select the “Boot” tab in the Boot Options section

      • Check the “Safe Boot/Minimal” check box

      • Restart

      • This will put you in “Safe Mode” with large icons and “Safe Mode” showing on all four corners of the screen (you may have to enter your password to get in).

      • Complete whatever your task is (possibly Restart again), then go back to “msconfig”, and uncheck the “Safe Boot” box, and restart. Should boot normally.

Thanks to How to Geek and Larry!

      Awesome!
