How to get your Flickr Photos to show up in your Facebook Stream

Posted on 20:48 by Unknown
http://www.flickr.com/help/account/#3102:

Can I automatically update my Facebook when I update my photostream?

Yes you can! We’ve made it even easier for you to use Facebook’s import feature. Just go to your account and activate the link (you may be asked to login at Facebook if you are not already). Once you’ve done that, your latest Flickr uploads will be added into your Facebook News Feed and Mini-Feed.

For more help, see this post:

Change Power Settings in Visa

Posted on 01:24 by Unknown
CHANGE VIA:  Control Panel > Power Options > Change Plan Settings > Change Advanced Power Settings

Standby puts your computer into energy-saving mode, where it uses very little power.

Hibernate saves your workspace (all your open windows), then turns the computer off.
The difference is that hibernate saves more energy because the computer goes off completely, but it takes longer for the computer to wake up from hibernation, so it's not as convenient.

Sleep initially means Standby, but it switches to Hibernate if the battery level drops too low (laptop) or the computer has been sleeping for more than three hours (both desktops & laptops). You can change the 3-hour period to something else in Settings > Power Options.

Thanks: http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/computers-sleep.html

In the basic sleep mode, the computer enters a low power-consumption mode, keeping programs and data state in memory; in hybrid sleep mode, the computer enters a low power-consumption mode, keeping programs and data state in memory but also writes the memory content to disk, which means in the event of a power outage the computer's state can be recovered from the disk version of the memory state. Hybrid sleep takes slightly longer to go into low power-mode because the memory content has to be written to disk. On my computer, sleep takes 2 seconds to enter, whereas hybrid sleep takes 16 seconds. The extra 14 seconds is worth it to avoid losing data in the event of a power outage.

Mailto: link is not opening my default email program

Posted on 18:18 by Unknown
This fix is done in IE but the fix will result in all browsers (Chrome, etc.) being fixed.

In IE go to Tools > Internet Options > Set Programs > Set program access and computer defaults > Custom (and select the downward facing chevrons to the right of "Custom" > Windows Mail (under Choose a default e-mail program).

To test:

Click Start -> Run and type "mailto:test@test.com" (without the quotation marks) in the "Open" box.  This replicates what happens when you click on an e-mail link on a web page.

Get your Flickr photos to show up in your Facebook profile

Posted on 17:37 by Unknown
Uploads in Flickr will automatically post on Facebook as thumbnail images that your friends can click on through to Flickr.

  • Go to:  http://www.flickr.com/account?tab=extend

  • Look at the bottom of the page for:  Your Facebook account

  • Click and follow instructions:  Link your accounts to share your Flickr updates on Facebook.

"Here is a caveat: it doesn’t always work automatically. I often have to go to my Facebook profile and click Settings (the one with the gear icon) below my status entry field. Then I have to click Update next to the Flickr import link. I often have to click this three times before it actually imports my latest photo links."

Thanks to:  http://danielgreene.com/2009/05/02/how-to-get-your-flickr-photos-to-show-up-in-your-facebook-profile/

More from flickr:

Why aren't my new uploads showing on Facebook?

After you have activated the link, photos marked as safe and public will appear in the feeds. Videos currently won't appear although we are hoping to add this in the future.

If your new safe & public photos fail to appear after linking your accounts, try manually updating your feed from within Facebook as follows:

  • Log into Facebook and go to your Profile

  • Under the "Whats' on your mind" status field, click 'Options' (just below the 'Share' button)

  • That word will change into 'Settings' - click that

  • You will see Flickr in the imported sites area

  • to update, click the Flickr link and tell it to update now

For more help with this feature, please contact Facebook support.

more info: http://www.dca.ca.gov/publications/legal_guides/s-11.shtml

fine print:
1) most gift certificate will say “expires x/y/z unless in california”, but even if they don’t have the “unless in california” wording, the businesses aren’t allowed to enforce the expiration date.

Excel: How to Create a Formula to Correctly Evaluate Blank Cells

Posted on 17:50 by Unknown
If you are checking a cell for a zero value and the cell is blank, the test evaluates to true. For example, if you have the following formula in cell A1
=IF(B1=0,"zero","blank")
and B1 is blank, the formula returns "zero" and not "blank" as expected. If the range might contain a blank cell, you should use the ISBLANK function to test for a zero value, as in the following example:
=IF(ISBLANK(B2),"blank",IF(B2=0,"zero","other"))
Note that the above formula returns "zero" if there is a zero value in the cell, "blank" if the cell is blank, and "other" if anything else is in the cell. You must always use the ISBLANK formula first before you test for a zero value. Otherwise you will always return a "true" for the zero value, and never get to the test for the ISBLANK formula.

Add "Email a Link" to Chrome

Posted on 16:39 by Unknown

Most browsers provide you with a way to easily email a link to the page you are currently viewing. When clicked, your default email application will produce a new message with the link in the body and the page title in the Subject line and the To field left blank for you to address. This functionality is missing from Chrome, but can easily added by creating a button on the Bookmarks bar.

Drag this link to your bookmarks bar: Send Link!.
Or if that doesn't work:
1. Open Chrome.
2. Right-click the Bookmarks bar and select Add Page.
3. In the Name textbox, input the word Send Link.
4. In the URL textbox, input the following:
javascript:location.href='mailto:?SUBJECT='+document.title+'&BODY='+escape(location.href);
5.Make sure that the Bookmarks bar folder is selected and click OK.

How to get a personalized FaceBook URL when they don’t offer one

Posted on 08:47 by Unknown
Facebook is not yet enabling “vanity” URL for your profiles but they “hope to make these URLs available (…) in the future.”

Until then you can do this:

1. Click on “home” then click on “profile”, you should see a URL like this in your address field:
www.facebook.com/home.php#/profile.php?id=123456789&ref=profile
2. Now copy that number, in this example 123456789.
3. The public URL for your Facebook page is then:
www.facebook.com/people/FirstName-LastName/123456789

Put in your real first and last name in the above link and keep the hyphen as separator. Voila!

However, if you want to be found by people who are not on Facebook yet, you would have to first make your profile publicly searchable by going to Privacy Settings -> Search.

When you have your personal URL, make it trackable baby!
Hint: Case Sensitive, took me 10 minutes to figure that out!
http://bit.ly/JenHarris09FaceBook

I use bit.ly & I can’t tell you how it has made my online life justifiable! You can customize a shortened URL, place it ANYWHERE you want (wordpress, FaceBook, Twitter (duh), LinkedIn, Communities etc) for optimal tracking. So if you are using anything BUT bit.ly, re-think & think how smart you will look when you can say “and then we received 80% of our hits from ONE post, which led to an increase in sales that day for a 45% conversion rate “.

Just saying, makes you look cool!

Ping to Test Internet Connection

Posted on 09:15 by Unknown
To run a ping test on Windows:
  1. Open the Command Prompt or MSDOS prompt dialog box (Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt).
  2. Type "ping www.verizon.net".
  3. Press [Enter] (Note: Some computers will not respond to the ping test for security reasons. If a Web page or server doesn't respond to ping, try a different one.)
You have an active internet connection if you see results similar to this:

Reply from 206.46.189.11: bytes=32 time=40ms TTL=249

Remove Line in Word Document

Posted on 18:57 by Unknown
To remove this “line,” select the paragraph above it and remove all the borders from it as follows:

In Word 2003 and earlier, go to the Format Borders and Shading dialog, and click the preset picture for “None.” Alternatively, click the down arrow beside the Borders button on the Formatting or Tables and Borders toolbar and choose the last (No Border) option in the palette.

In Word 2007, on the Home tab, locate the Paragraph group. The bottom right button is the Borders button; click the arrow beside it and select No Border.

In any version, you can simply click in the offending paragraph and press Ctrl+Q, which resets the paragraph formatting to the default for the style (which doesn’t include borders). This, however, will remove any other direct paragraph formatting as well as the border.

iTunes - Wrong Artwork in Coverflow, but Correct Artwork in File

Posted on 09:08 by Unknown

Took a bit of time to figure this one out:

iTune's coverflow gets the album cover from the first track with art.

Thus:

1- find the first track for the ablum (do a search within the iTune's search bar)

2- on the first song for the album: right click, get info, artwork, delete the incorrect artwork which either leaves the correct artwork or allows you to upload your own.

3- I'd do this for all the songs on the album while you're there.

Voila!
